With a lifetime of automotive experience, Tim Cavanaugh spent 25 years at General Motors launching over 30 new vehicles. Tim was responsible for connecting OnStar to the Electronic Control Module (ECM) in order to feed vehicle health to a webserver and later onto a smartphone for the first connected telematic vehicles. He later wrote the requirements to allow for Hands Free calling using Bluetooth. Then added WiFi to both Chevrolet and Cadillac. While executive director at BAE Systems he connected the US Military land, air and sea vehicles to what was politely called "a secured military version of OnStar on prognostic and predictive maintenance steroids." While at the National Automotive Center he developed various emerging technologies for the US Military which included the development of automated vehicles and robots and drones. Tim currently develops engineering events centered around autonomous/automated vehicles, hybrid/electric vehicles and IoT/Cloud. He's connected globally to the industry leaders of the OEMs and Tier 1 and 2 Suppliers to bring the best innovative speakers to the stage for SAE International.

Cybersecurity for connected / autonomous vehicles Everyone wants the improved safety, economy and features offered by increasingly connected, driver assisted and autonomous vehicles. These benefits are driven by software taking over certain driving tasks, which suggests a gating issue around the security of vehicles, communications systems and cloud infrastructure. What lessons can be drawn from earlier rollouts of mobile devices and PCs? In previous rollouts, only data was at stake but with vehicles fleets there is the potential for driver distraction, ransomware, denial of service, property damage, bodily injury and disruption of transport infrastructure.

Simon is an industry recognized expert in cybersecurity, mobility and IoT, co-founder of Washington D.C. based cybersecurity startups 202 Partners and RunSafe Security. He is a member of the Society of Automotive Engineers’ IoT Cybersecurity Committee and a contributing author of their new book “Cybersecurity for Commercial Vehicles". RunSafe was developed as part of DARPA’s High-Assurance Cyber Military Systems (HACMS) program of cybersecurity for military vehicles, drones and medical devices. Simon also worked with Apple and Samsung in hardening their mobile devices for DoD and government use. Previously, he was VP of Sales at Kaprica Security (acquired by Samsung), Mobile Program Director, DMI, market leader in enterprise managed mobility and Director of Sales at Thursby Software, market leader in strong iPhone security. Prior executive sales and management roles in the US and Europe include Red Hat, HP, Capgemini, a $9B hedge fund, a $50MM dot com and a background in nuclear software engineering. He holds a BS in Physics from U-Manchester, England, a MS in Law & Cybersecurity from U-Maryland Carey Law, CISSP, CEH and CIPP/US cybersecurity and privacy certifications.
